Over the last few weeks in 6th grade Spanish we’ve been learning about the parts of speech and the order in which we write sentences. The girls have been practicing this in various ways, including writing about famous people who are alive, dead, famous only to the girls who wrote about them, or imaginary. Some of these people included Hilary Clinton, Sir Isaac Newton, Justin Bieber, George the Pumpkin, and many others. I asked them to write sentences with at least one adverb or adjective per sentence and the girls truly rose to the challenge to put together creative and humorous sentences.
Today we put that hard work to great use by describing various pictures that were posted around the room. Here are a few of those pictures they described:
This was a creative challenge that the girls took on to make sentences with adjectives and adverbs and order their sentences properly in Spanish. To do this, the girls used the words from our Clases de Palabras that we’ve been working with as well as the words that they have been assigning themselves to learn in their Spanish dictionaries. They worked hard to practice specifically with these words so that they have an easier time remembering how to use these words as well as what they mean.
This week in Spanish, we’ve been seeing how sentences in Spanish are structured differently from English. We reviewed the parts of speech and what they do. This of course, included many singing sessions of “Conjunction Junction” from Schoolhouse Rock. We practiced labeling the parts of speech in example Spanish sentences so that we had a better grasp on what they looked like in Spanish.
Once we had practiced these sentences we were able to play a game! Everyone was given a different part of speech en Español with example words and their definitions. Then, only using Spanish, everyone went around the room to put together their part of speech with their classmates to correctly formulate sentences. At the end of the activity, everyone chose one of their sentences that they had made and put it on the board for the class to see.
The creativity that came out of this activity made learning sentence structures and parts of speech much more enjoyable. Our group came up with sentences such as giving advice to not drink bad water, large talking tables, and bad dancing. The girls brought this activity to life and had fun with the sentences. Thanks to them for all of their hard work.
